Usual Effect
This is the primary gauge for consumer spending which significantly contributes to Canada's economic activity. A high reading is usually considered to be bullish for the CAD.

Why Traders Care
The report serves as a direct gauge of consumption and consumer confidence. Retail Trade is one an important leading indicator for Canada and part of the Index of Leading Indicator used to forecast economic developments.
