It is a unitary parliamentary republic whose capital is Rome. It is a founding member of the European Union and eurozone and is a member of the G7, G20, and NATO.
Italy has the fourth-largest economy in the eurozone and the seventh-largest in the world in terms of nominal GDP.
It enjoys a high per capita GDP and has a free market economy.
Its export goods include engineering products, textiles and clothing, machinery, automobiles, transport equipment, chemicals, food, beverages and tobacco, minerals, and nonferrous metals.
It conducts most of its trade with Germany and France, its two largest export and import partners.
