Why should I care?
The survey can be an early indicator of activity levels in the manufacturing sector. Purchasing managers have the highest authority to spend in a company as they usually have significant insight into their company's economic outlook. More purchases reflect great confidence in their company's financial stability which directly affects employment growth, income and other indicators. A figure higher than 50 means that the sector is expanding.
The OlsenScale (SMQ)
The Olsen Scale quantifies the market activity according to the Scale of Market Quakes (SMQ).
Similar to the Richter scale which measures the release of seismic energy during an earthquake, the SMQ relates excessive pricing along various price and time scales to historical data by assigning a single number to it. On a constant basis, the scale therefore characterizes the state of the market.
