In last week’s blog post, I’ve listed some of the advantages of setting up a VPS for forex trading, one of which is the ability to log in to your trading platform from anywhere and through almost any device. If this is something you’re interested in, take a look at this guide for a basic low-cost setup.
What do you need?
- Your main forex trading machine (desktop or laptop)
- Your remote device (laptop, tablet, or smartphone)
- Dynamic DNS account
- Access to your home/work router
Step 1: Sign up for a dynamic DNS account
Before y’all get too overwhelmed by this geek-speak, lemme just quickly explain that a dynamic DNS simply allows you to create and use an easy-to-remember IP address to access your workstation instead of memorizing a bunch of numbers. Think of it as coming up with a customized 1-800-GIMMEPIPS telephone number versus a set of digits.
NO-IP offers a free dynamic DNS service that can allow you to access your computer from any internet-connected device. Just follow the steps to set one up and activate your account, and this DNS service should automatically link your hostname to your current IP address.
Step 2: Configure your router
Yep, you gotta configure your router to give you remote access from a laptop or tablet. No need to panic for those who aren’t tech-savvy. You can always call your significant other for help or you can follow this port-forwarding guide.
For starters, you need to identify your default gateway IP address in your home or work network which should give you access to your router settings. The port-forwarding tools are usually found under the Security section:
- External port: 8080
- Internal port: 8080
- Protocol: Select “both” to enable access from either TCP or UDP devices
- Device IP: Input the internal IP address of your remote device
Step 3: Enable your Remote Desktop Connection
If you’re using Windows as your main forex trading terminal, don’t forget to enable the Remote Desktop Connection, which basically gives permission to be accessed by a different device.
To do this, open your Control Panel then click on System and Services/Maintenance. From there, click on System then Remote Settings. Select the option “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer” under the Remote Desktop panel.
Step 4: Install the necessary programs on your remote device
Depending on which Dynamic DNS service you are using, it typically comes with a program or app that you need to install on your main PC and remote device from which you will access your forex workstation. Just input your username and password from your main machine when prompted. Tada!
Alternatively, you can check out programs like TeamViewer, LogMeIn, and AnyDesk, although these remote access services can come at a cost after a trial period or if you’d like to add more features. Next up, we’ll take a look at some of the available forex VPS solutions that can allow you to keep your EA up and running even while your PC is turned off.
